Bowen Yang Shares the Gift Lorne Michaels Gives the SNL Cast Every Year (Exclusive)

Bowen Yang shares some of them sweetest Holiday Traditions at Studio 8H.

In addition to the cast’s so-called “garbage party” that takes place after the reading of the film Saturday Night Live Every year on the Christmas episode, Yang, 34, tells PEOPLE that the cast looks forward to Lorne Michael’s sweet Christmas present.

“He gives you jams and jams from his farm and it’s the most delicious raspberry jam you’ve ever tasted,” he says Evil Stern says about that SNL annual gift from the Creator. “I look forward to it every year. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. This is the nice group gift he gives everyone and everyone is really excited. Everyone is really excited to get the jams every year.”

And according to Yang, Michaels’ generosity doesn’t stop until the holiday season, he also gives out birthday gifts to the cast.

“I think part of his love language is gift-giving,” Yang explains.

During the holiday conversation with PEOPLE, Yang also shared more about how the trash party got started. According to the story, the cast used to exchange gifts through Secret Santa, but due to the varying quality of the gifts, “people’s feelings were hurt,” so former cast members Aidy Bryant and Kate McKinnon came up with their own idea.

“It’s like a potluck rather than a gift,” he says. “It’s like when people buy 20 cheeseburgers at Shake Shack, or you bring Jello shots from home, or you bring 30 Funko Pops for people to take home. Basically everyone just collects their strange, highly random contributions.”

“It’s a trash party because it’s a messy potluck and it’s so much fun,” he adds. “(It’s) our great tradition that we keep up and it’s all thanks to Kate and Aidy.”

Yang started a gifting tradition of his own this year by teaming up with Pinterest to curate The Las Culturistas gift guide. named after the podcast he co-hosts with his best friend Matt Rogers.

“This is our way of bringing the podcast into your life through these gifts,” he explains of the guide, which includes Mariah Carey’s memoir and a Chappell Roan record.

“They’re all really hand-picked by me and Matt,” he says. “We really went through the exacting process of saying, ‘Okay, we should have this many records, this many celebrity memoirs, this many things.’ But we should also have a little Easter egg or two so that people who listening to the podcast, knowing what that means.” And there are little winks everywhere.
