In Florida, temperatures could drop to over 20 degrees during the frost watch

What’s new

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures could dip below 30°C in parts of northern Florida and southern Georgia over the weekend.

Why it matters

Temperatures of up to 30 degrees can occur and people, plants and property exposed to these temperatures could be at risk, the NWS warns.

“Appropriate measures should be taken to ensure that sensitive outdoor vegetation and pets are adequately protected from the cold temperatures. Young children, the elderly and homeless people are particularly vulnerable to the cold. Take action to protect them,” the NWS alert says.

What you should know

The NWS released a map of areas affected by the freeze watch. The watch comes as temperatures will be in the mid 60s Friday afternoon and are expected to be in the mid 50s Saturday.

The freeze watch is in effect from Saturday night through Sunday morning, according to the NWS.

A winter weather advisory is also in effect for several states north of Georgia: West Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee and Kentucky. The area could see snow accumulations of 2 to 7 inches, according to the NWS. West Virginia could see wind gusts of 35 miles per hour and 6 inches of snow.

“Plan for slippery road conditions. The dangerous conditions could impact Friday night commutes, the NWS says.”

What people say

In a phone call with Newsweek on Friday, NWS meteorologist Jason Hess said that it was “very typical of this time of year” to see a frozen clock. Hess added that the biggest concern is plants and vegetation “after we had about four or five frosts in December. It could be another shock to the plants.”

“The duration of the freeze can be two to four hours and along the I-10 corridor, Lake City and Live Oak are among the major cities where the freeze will be observed,” Hess said. It’s normal for the Jacksonville area to see about “12 to 15 frost days a year,” Hess noted, adding that it’s different there than in the southern part of the state.
