The Giants are turning back to Drew Lock as their starting QB against the Falcons

EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Another week, another starting quarterback for the New York Giants, who look to return to Drew Lock on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.

Lock will face a Falcons team whose quarterback is rookie Michael Penix Jr., who was named Atlanta’s starter Tuesday night ahead of veteran Kirk Cousins.

Lock didn’t play in last week’s upset loss to the Ravens because of a heel injury. He also struggled with problems in his left elbow.

“Drew should be OK,” Daboll said before Lock went out Wednesday and practiced for the first time since ditching the boot on his foot.

The Giants (2-12) have been unable to agree on a starter since benching Daniel Jones last month. New York surprisingly turned to Tommy DeVito, the team’s third player all season up to that point, in the upset loss to the Buccaneers on November 24th. Jones was released before that game and ultimately signed with the Vikings.

But DeVito injured his forearm against the Bucs and missed a Thanksgiving Day loss to the Cowboys, which opened the door for Lock to start two games before the heel injury forced New York to switch back to DeVito last Sunday against the Ravens.

“It’s definitely different,” Lock said. “But at the same time, Tommy was upset when the bell rang, he couldn’t play. I went in there, the hoe thing happened and then he goes back in. We just had a few unfortunate things happen and we just keep rolling with the punches.

DeVito was ejected from the game after completing 10 of 13 passes for 68 yards behind a shredded offensive line in the first half. He was sidelined with a concussion but was back on the field on Wednesday and is likely to be Lock’s replacement on Sunday if he progresses without any setbacks.

“He goes through the protocol,” Daboll said. “He’s doing something today. He’ll have a chance to be No. 2 (against the Falcons).”

Veteran Tim Boyle ended Sunday’s loss to the Ravens by throwing the Giants’ first touchdown pass since Jones on Nov. 3. Boyle completed 12 of 24 passes for 123 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the second half against Baltimore.

“Everything is a little different for every guy,” Daboll said. “Sure you would like to have a guy with you all the time, but that’s not the reality.”

The Giants are currently on a nine-game losing streak heading into Sunday’s game against Penix and the Falcons. Coincidentally, Penix will face one of the teams that took him in this year’s draft for the first time.

New York decided against selecting a quarterback and instead used the sixth overall draft pick on wide receiver Malik Nabers, who is just 100 yards away from 1,000 yards receiving.

Penix surprisingly ended up going eighth overall to the Falcons, even after they signed Cousins to a four-year deal worth up to $180 million last offseason.

The Giants, on the other hand, are currently in position to pick first in the draft in 2025. They are expected to address the quarterback position with Jones gone and Lock set to become a free agent.
