It’s official, Dragon Ball Super is finally coming back in 2025. After the death of Akira Toriyama in March, the Dragon Ball Super The manga was put on indefinite hiatus and the finale of Chapter 103 felt like a fitting farewell to the legendary mangaka’s life’s work. Fans were excited for the return of Super in every respect, be it a continuation of the manga or part 2 of the anime adaptation, which now offers plenty of material to work with. Fans will have to wait a little longer for the anime, but the manga’s return in February 2025 has at least been confirmed.

This was announced at Jump Festa 2025 Dragon Ball Super would return on February 20th with a special one-shot story written by Toyotarou. This is a huge development because the future of Super as a series was uncertain after Toriyama’s death, as was the apparent finality of Chapter 103’s story arc. Although there were undoubtedly many unanswered questions SuperThroughout history, many fans had come to terms with the very real possibility that that Dragon Ball Super Manga was over. The sequel to Super This new one-shot is amazing news, but with the unfortunate caveat that this one-shot isn’t exactly what fans of the series were hoping for from the long-awaited return of the beloved series.

Toyotarou’s new one-shot will be published in the April issue of V-Jump, out February 20th (V-Jump magazines are usually published two months before the month in which their title appears). The one-shot will feature a new side story featuring Goten and Trunks as they were during Toyotarou’s manga adaptation of the film Dragon Ball Super: Superhero Film. Interestingly, there will also be a somewhat new character that has only been hinted at but never seen in action: Clean God. Clean God was first introduced in the High School Saga, which served as an extremely brief prequel to the Super Hero Saga in the manga. Focusing on Goten and Trunks’ escapades as the superhero duo Saiyaman X-1 and Saiyaman X-2, The High School Saga was a fun and short detour that gave Gotenks some much-needed development.

February 20th will be a great day for Dragon Ball Super fans

Dragon Ball fans have a lot to look forward to in 2025 as Toyotarou’s Dragon Ball Super Manga returns soon with a brand new one-shot story.

Like Saiyaman X-1 and Dragon Ball Universe known as Pure God. Goten and Trunks were big fans of Clean God, and Trunks even tried to ask Mai out on a date to see the new Clean God movie. While any new super news is great to see, most Dragon Ball fans probably wouldn’t have wanted a short one-shot with an obscure supporting character like Clean God. However, the potential for more Goten and Trunks content is intriguing, as the two have been woefully underused in Super’s previous storylines.

Goten and Trunks are the stars of Super’s new one-shot

Gotenks could finally get the power-up they need to become relevant again

While Clean God is being hailed as the breakout star SuperIn the upcoming one-shot, the real heroes will undoubtedly be Goten and Trunks, just like in the superhero saga. Clean God was the main inspiration for Goten and Trunks’ Saiyaman X-1 and X-2, so it’s almost certain that the two will play more than just a minor role. The actual plot of the one-shot has yet to be revealed, although the fact that it revolves around Goten and Trunks could shed some light on what’s to come.

By the end of Chapter 103, Goten and Trunks were by far the weakest Saiyans and were so out of action that they couldn’t even successfully fuse with Gotenks. This is a far cry from her demeanor DBZin which Gotenks became only the second character in the series to reach Super Saiyan 3, after Goku. This showed the effortless force that Gotenks could be, either as a fusion or as a tag team, but unfortunately Super never really made anything of their potential.

Dragon Ball DAIMA is obviously preparing for Vegito’s return, right?

A fan-favorite fusion of Goku and Vegeta will soon make his grand return in Dragon Ball DAIMA.

This short one-shot, once again starring Goten and Trunks, could finally be a means of giving the two of them a major power-up (or at least hinting at it in the future) that they can finally share with the rest of the main cast brings to eye level. Toyotarou went to great lengths to bring Goten and Trunks to the forefront in his adaptation of the Super Hero Saga, giving them a role they never had in Toriyama’s original script. Toyotarou is clearly a fan of Dragon Ballis the dynamic teenage duo, and now that the ball is more in their court, it’s entirely possible that Gotenks will come to the fore more than ever.

Black Frieza’s return could be imminent

New official art from Toyotarou may hint at the highly anticipated Black Frieza Arc

While the conclusion of Granolah the Survivor Saga hinted that Black Frieza could be the potential main villain of Dragon Ball SuperIn the next storyline, the series took a small detour with the adaptation of the superhero saga, which followed the story of Gohan and Piccolo on Earth. Black Frieza was not entirely overlooked in this saga, as he served as an inspiration for Goku and Vegeta to achieve new levels of power during their training on Beerus’ planet, but he never made a personal appearance in the 16 chapters that made up the Super Appearance hero saga. The threat of Frieza’s latest transformation is ever-present in the background, with Gohan and Piccolo’s new Gohan-Beqst and Orange-Piccolo forms only making them more relevant in the possible upcoming battle against Frieza.

Against this background Super Readers have been anticipating Frieza’s return for some time, as it just seemed like the logical next step for the series. While the new Clean God one-shot likely won’t have much to do directly with Black Frieza’s story, that doesn’t mean it won’t reference it in some way. The biggest hint of Black Frieza’s impending return actually came in the promotional art that Toyotarou drew for Jump Festa, which featured a brand new, full-color image of Black Frieza in all of his stunning glory. At least this shows that Toyotarou hasn’t forgotten the character. However, for him, choosing Black Frieza specifically to represent the series, as opposed to a more recognizable image like UI Goku or Vegeta, is an interesting choice, and perhaps hints at what’s to come for the series’ future.
