Sanders, known as “Prime Time,” won the 1988 Jim Thorpe Award, which honors the best defensive back in college football.

There was hope that Sanders could return to Oklahoma City as Colorado’s head coach if two-way star Travis Hunter, a Thorpe Award semifinalist, won. However, he was not selected as a finalist.

“He (Travis Hunter) should win the Thorpe, the Biletnikoff, the Jerry Rice and the Prime Awards. He should win every damn award you get,” Sanders said.

“Deion is a great coach. I’ve never had the chance to meet him. But who knows, maybe he’ll be here in February,” James said.

Sanders said he believes there should be an award specifically for cornerbacks.

“They should have the best cornerback in college football. They should call it the Prime (Award),” Sanders said.
