The Chiefs pushed to add $36 million for the Pro Bowler in a risk-free move

The Kansas City Chiefs are close to the playoffs and potentially the No. 1 seed in the AFC. Their offense has been inconsistent this season and they have the opportunity to add a Pro Bowl wide receiver this late in the season.

The Baltimore Ravens traded for Dionte Johnson at the NFL trade deadline. However, they waived the former Pro Bowler after he failed to live up to expectations. ESPN’s Adam Schefter noted that the Chiefs are among the teams that could claim him on Monday.

“Sources say former Ravens WR Diontae Johnson will likely be claimed on waivers on Monday,” Schefter wrote

Johnson signed a two-year, $36 million contract extension with the Steelers in 2022. He will be a free agent after the season and could be a risk-free addition. Johnson’s time in Baltimore brought with it some concerns about his character and his ability to be a team player. However, Andy Ried and the Chiefs have a track record of giving players a second chance to revive their careers.

This season alone, they took a chance on DeAndre Hopkins and Kareem Hunt after it seemed like their careers were on a steep decline. Hopkins and Hunt were key pieces of the offense. Johnson could be a dynamic addition as the Chiefs are still looking for a true replacement for Rashee Rice.

If Johnson ends up being a problem for the culture, they could always cut him. This late in the season, the Chiefs must look to secure any support they can to be successful in the playoffs.
