Murray TD runs and pulls the cards close

Kyler Murray ran 20 yards for a touchdown on a planned run, bringing the Cardinals within three points of the Panthers.

The nine-play, 70-yard drive included some key completions from Murray to Greg Dortch and Michael Carter.

Score: Panthers 30, Cardinals 27 (6:56 remaining in the fourth quarter)

Bryce Young throws the second TD pass

After both teams scored three points, the Panthers went on a scoring drive that ended with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Bryce Young to David Moore.

It was the second TD pass of the day for Young, who also ran for a score.

The key plays during the 58-yard drive were 15- and 12-yard completions from Yong to tight end Tommy Tremble.

Score: Panthers 30, Cardinals 20 (12:04 remaining in the fourth quarter).

The Cardinals got it down to 3 but are worried about injuries

Chad Ryland hit a 30-yard field goal to bring the Cardinals within three points, but the big concern now is the health of two key offensive starters who were injured during the nine-play, 58-yard scoring drive.

Running back James Conner was injured after a short 2-yard catch and had to go to the sideline to be checked on his right knee.

Right tackle Jonah Williams, meanwhile, left the field one play later with what appeared to be his own lower leg injury and was accompanied by trainers. The Cardinals are already without their starting left tackle in Paris Johnson Jr. for this game. Their primary backup right tackle, Kelvin Beachum, will start at left tackle in his place.

Score: Panthers 23, Cardinals 20 (5:00 left in the third quarter).

The Panthers attack a FG

Carolina took over the offense in the second half and went 56 yards in 11 plays before settling for a 29-yard field goal from Eddy Pineiro.

The Panthers converted twice on third down, including a 20-yard pass from Bryce Young to his favorite target, Adam Thielen, to reach the Arizona 17-yard line.

Score: Panthers 23, Cardinals 17 (9:31 in third quarter).

James Conner is on the ball right now

The Cardinals may have finally figured it out: They’re letting their workhorse running back attack one of the NFL’s worst rush defenses — and it’s working.

Conner ran 12 times for 111 yards and caught three passes for 47 more yards. He was a one-man wrecking ball as the Cardinals drove 68 yards in nine plays for another touchdown, bringing them within three points at halftime.

Conner ran six times for 52 yards and had one reception for 10 yards, and with the added help of a Jaycee Horn pass interference call on Trey McBride in the end zone, the Cardinals capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass Kyler Murray to DeeJay Dallas.

Conner surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the second straight year and has his sixth 100-yard rushing game in 2024.

James Conner (6) of the Arizona Cardinals passes the ball against the Carolina Panthers in the first quarter at Bank of America Stadium on Dec. 22, 2024 in Charlotte.

Murray is 9 of 12 for 87 yards and a touchdown. Bryce Young is 5 of 10 for 47 yards and a touchdown. He also completed six carries for 61 yards and a score.

Score: Panthers 20, Cardinals 17 (halftime).

The Cardinals pull within 20-10

Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray failed a handoff exchange with rarely used running back Michael Carter, and the Carolina Panthers wasted no time converting the turnover into points.

After defensive end Jonathan Harris recovered the fumble at the Arizona 30, Bryce Young hit David Moore on a 21-yard pass play and two plays later Young found a wide-open Adam Thielen in the end zone for an easy 8-yard touchdown Reception.

The Panthers led 20-3 after the extra point with 7:55 left in the first half, but the Cardinals quickly responded with a touchdown of their own.

They covered 70 yards in just four plays, capped by a 6-yard touchdown from James Conner. Conner caught a pass from Kyler Murray on the previous play for a big 36-yard gain.

Score: Panthers 20, Cardinals 10 (5:57 left in the second quarter).

Bryce Young scores with a 23-yard TD sprinter

It only took six plays for the Panthers to score on their second possession.

The difference was made by quarterback Bryce Young, who rushed for 57 yards twice, including a 23-yard touchdown run.

The Panthers faced a third-and-7 situation, the Cardinals were in man-to-man coverage, and Young had plenty of time to scan the field. He took a big block from Chuba Hubbard and saw nothing but open field to his left.

Young ran into the end zone with ease. However, kicker Eddy Peneiro missed the extra point wide left.

Score: Panthers 13, Cardinals 0 (11:35 left in the second quarter).

The Cardinals score a field goal and reduce the score to 7:3

The penalties continue to hurt the Cardinals, who have now been rejected eight times for 69 yards.

A holding penalty on center Hjalte Froholdt on a fourth down conversion attempt negated a 7-yard gain and first down by James Conner. The team settled for a 48-yard field goal from Chad Ryland.

A 40-yard run from Conner earlier helped Arizona get within range.

Score: Panthers 7, Cardinals 0 (14:37 left in the second quarter).

The Panthers take a 7-0 lead after a long drive

After a quick three-and-out by the Cardinals to start the game, the Panthers took the lead and launched a 15-play, 70-yard drive capped by Chuba Hubbard’s 4-yard run.

The ride took almost eight full minutes.

Carolina converted twice on fourth down during their first possession, both times on runs by Hubbard.

Penalties, meanwhile, were a problem for the Cardinals, who entered the game as the NFL’s least penalized team. Arizona was rejected twice on its first possession, then twice during Carolina’s drive and again on the ensuing kickoff.

That’s five penalties for 49 yards.

Score: Panthers 7, Cardinals 0 (4:55 left in first quarter).
