How the Chargers can secure a playoff spot in Week 16

The Chargers won’t play on Sunday… but they can still clinch a first-year playoff spot under Jim Harbaugh.

With the Bolts at 9-6 and the No. 6 seed in the AFC playoff picture, the Chargers would clinch a playoff spot with:

– a Colts loss or draw

– a Dolphins loss or draw

Both outcomes must occur for the Chargers to make the playoffs.

Indianapolis and Miami are both 6-8, as a loss or tie in either means they can’t get to nine wins.

Since the Chargers already have nine wins, the Bolts would secure their spot unless both teams win.

The Colts host the Titans at 10:00 a.m. (PT), while the Dolphins host the 49ers at 1:25 p.m. (PT). We’ll know early Sunday afternoon if the Bolts have a chance to win later in the day.

So if you’re looking for strong interest on Sunday, you’ll want to root for the Titans and 49ers.

If the Chargers don’t get the win on Sunday, they can do so with a win on Saturday in New England.

Harbaugh said Thursday night that the Bolts are focused only on themselves in the playoff race.

“We still have games to win,” Harbaugh said. “Nine wins get you into the playoffs, but you need help.”

“10 wins is possible most years and this year I think that will be the case. 11 usually gets you in the game,” Harbaugh added.
