Raiders win the battle but lose the war

It’s a strange situation. Knowing that every positive move the Raiders make brings them closer to losing the top pick in the draft.

Clearly these players have no end in them. Neither do the coaches. It’s all about their individual reputation, every ride and winning a W.

But the franchise’s top priority is getting a quarterback of the future. Or I should say: THE top priority.

So when they face a team like the Jaguars with a 3-11 record, it’s in the franchise’s best interest to come out on the losing side.

They didn’t do that on Sunday in Las Vegas. In a tough game to watch between two really bad teams, it was the Jaguars who terrified the Raiders.

They had two fumbles in the first half alone, both of which were recovered by the Raiders. One after they had gotten within goal range. The result was a 13-7 halftime lead for the Raiders.

How bad was it? How hard did each team try to hand it to the other team?

Well, the Raiders didn’t convert a third down until midway through the third quarter. And yet somehow still had a six-point lead.

The two teams traded touchdowns in the third and fourth quarters, but the Raiders went for two and missed touchdowns, giving the Raiders a five-point lead at 19-14.

On the morning slate, three of the five teams the Raiders will face for a top pick lost their games, while the fourth (Partiots) will face the 11-3 Bills in the afternoon.

This means that the win will put them out of the top five in the race for the top pick. And for a team desperate for one of the best QBs in this draft, that’s just not good enough.

There are still three games left in the season, but this win over a bad team makes getting close to this top pick a steep prospect.

For the Jaguars, it came down to a single drive. With just over a minute left, it looked for a moment as if the Jaguars might hold the penalty on 4th down, and one put it up on 4th-and-11. And the Jaguars couldn’t catch up.

The Raiders knelt until the end and ended their ten-game losing streak with a 19-14 victory over the Jagurs.

With the win, the Raiders improve to 3-12 on the season. Behind the 2-13 Giants and tied in the win column with four other teams, some of which have a slower schedule than themselves.
