Dan Campbell leads the Lions to a team-record 13th win, but it’s still not time to celebrate

CHICAGO, Ill. – Dan Campbell’s team just accomplished something no other Detroit Lions team has ever done.

The Lions defeated the Chicago Bears 34-17 in Week 16 to pick up their 13th win. In doing so, they set a new franchise record for wins in a single season. Campbell asked questions about the milestone and expressed his thoughts in his opening remarks.

It was an important win for playoff berth and repeat title as NFC North champions. And it was also a step back in the right direction after losing a tough shootout to the Buffalo Bills.

But Campbell knew his team could overcome the challenge and said they approached this away game with the right attitude from the start.

“It takes a special group of guys to bounce back emotionally, physically and mentally after a bad loss, especially when you haven’t lost in a while,” Campbell said. “Go out and win on the road again. I told the guys I knew that was a team record, a franchise record – 13 wins.

“This has never been done before. I told them that one day we would be able to look back and enjoy this. But not yet. It’s not the right time.”

The Lions also set a new single-season points record, surpassing the 474 points scored in the 2011 season.

Campbell’s attention, even after the Washington Commanders defeated the Philadelphia Eagles as he spoke, was on the team that controlled its own destiny.

Jared Goff said the Lions would use the 24-hour rule to get comfortable on the matter before turning their attention back to the task at hand. He said they will enjoy this one and then come back to it after another powerful show.

“Sure, I’m happy about a win like that and the aftermath,” said Goff. “But then tomorrow and Tuesday we’ll come back down to earth and get back to work. I think Dan has the edge on this.

“But we’re so good at focusing on what’s important. We lost last week, everyone thinks we’re done now. And it’s like, “Okay, forget that.” That’s not even part of our process. We’re going to get back to what we do, get back to work, and that’s exactly what we did.”

The Lions are back on the road next week with another primetime game. They face the San Francisco 49ers in an NFC title game rematch on Monday Night Football. It’s a chance to get another win within the conference and regain victory for the team that ended its season a year ago.

“We have a lot of work to do next week,” Campbell said. “San Francisco on the way. Very good team.

“But until today? We did what we had to do. Got two takeaways and turned them into 10 points. Got up early and was able to really control the game. I thought we played the game right. I thought we played it right. It’s a good job.”
