Josh Allen injury: What happened against the Patriots and what Bills QB said about it

The Buffalo Bills quarterback appeared to suffer a right arm injury early in the fourth quarter of the team’s 24-21 win over the New England Patriots. After taking off on a second-and-10 play, Allen could be seen flexing his right hand after being thrown to the ground.

Luckily for the Bills quarterback, the injury wasn’t as serious as it seemed. Similar to a few weeks ago, Allen extended his elbow and hit his funny bone nerve just right. The end result was a temporary loss of feeling in his hand.

“Little elbow. I don’t know if it was the elbow, the helmet or the ground, but I lost some feeling in my hand,” Allen told the media after the game. “Just hit the funny bone nerve.”

On the play after the funny bone nerve hit, Allen threw a deep ball down the field to Dalton Kincaid. The pass was flawed and strangely seemed to come away from his hand. The quarterback explained that the poor throw was because he had no feeling in his hand when he attempted it.

“I went to throw the ball and I had no feeling in my hand…,” Allen said. “It’s hard to throw without feeling it in your hand.”

Buffalo would punt the ball away as the quarterback worked to get the blood flowing again. According to Allen, it took between five and 10 minutes for feeling to return to his hand.

“It took a good five to 10 minutes (to get the feeling back),” Allen told the media. “I’m just making sure some blood flows back in and something is activated. No matter how cold it is, the more you leave it out, the more your whole hand gets. It was a strange feeling. I’m glad it’s gone now.”

Buffalo’s quarterback was able to get back into the game on the next offensive series, but acknowledged he likely would have missed some time if the offense had been quick on the field.

“Depending on when we get the ball back,” Allen said when asked if there was any doubt he would return to the game. “Luckily it was a longer ride where I was able to get some feel and feeling back in my hands. If there was a sudden change, I probably wouldn’t have been out there.”

Buffalo’s defense was on the field for an extended period of time after Allen suffered a blow to his elbow. The defense scored a touchdown on a reverse pass from Drake Maye that bounced off his running back’s hands. The unit then returned to the field for a five-game series. When the Patriots finished the punt, Allen was ready to return to the game.

Allen had a bad day in the Bills’ 24-21 win. He completed 16 of 29 passes for 154 yards with one touchdown and one interception while rushing for 30 yards on six attempts. Even though Allen didn’t necessarily live up to his standards, the team found a way to win and the quarterback avoided any serious injury.
