New England Patriots rookie quarterback Drake Maye responded to criticism of head coach Jerod Mayo and offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt following a 24-21 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

“A lot of conversations about our coaching staff and things like that,” Maye said, via Mark Daniels of MassLive.com. “To be completely honest, I think it’s nonsense. Coach Mayo, we’re behind him. I’ve just called it great the last few weeks.

Drake Maye on criticizing Pats coaches:
“Lots of conversations about our coaching staff and things like that. I think that’s a lot of nonsense, to be honest. Coach Mayo, we are behind him. He’s training us hard… AVP has been great in my opinion over the last few weeks. pic.twitter.com/lcPn1aypCE

“There are guys who aren’t even playing who are screaming on the sidelines and wanting to win. I think we’re building something good, something that feels right here,” he added, according to Daniels. “And I’m proud to be a patriot.”

Sunday’s loss marked New England’s fifth straight and dropped the team to 3-12 this season.

The Patriots nearly pulled off a late comeback against the Bills when they scored a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to get within three points. However, Buffalo was able to move the chains and run out the clock after New England called all three timeouts on the ensuing possession.

Maye has been one of the Patriots’ few bright spots this season and continued to show his potential against Buffalo. He finished 22 of 36 for 261 yards and two touchdowns and one interception and added 30 rush yards on six attempts.

Maye’s defense of the New England team is admirable, especially for a quarterback still in his first season in the NFL.

The No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 draft has only been the Patriots’ starter since Week 6. Entering Sunday’s action, he completed 68.5 percent of his throws for 1,898 yards and 12 touchdowns while being picked off nine times.

Mayo’s job doesn’t appear to be in jeopardy despite New England’s poor record, nor does NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday that he is expected to return as the team’s head coach in 2025 unless he completely collapses before the end of the regular season.

As Maye completes his first year and looks to build momentum in his second season, he continues to advocate for his coaching staff.
