The three biggest things we learned from Bills vs. Patriots

Tyler Bass’ 50-yard field goal gave the Bills their first lead of the game. On the next drive, senior defensive back Cam Lewis intercepted Maye in the end zone. The Patriots QB threw it where his receiver wasn’t, and Lewis picked up the first INT of his five-year NFL career.

Lewis has been the team’s starting safety for the past two weeks while safeties Taylor Rapp and Damar Hamlin were sidelined with injuries.

“It’s great,” McDermott said of Lewis’ game. “He’s been pushed into the starting role at safety the last two weeks and I think he’s done a really good job.”

The third turnover was perhaps Buffalo’s most important of the day. At their own 8-yard line with 10:17 left in the fourth quarter, Patriots QB Drake Maye had a pass intended for Stevenson that was fired by the RB behind the line of scrimmage, where it turned into a live ball.

CB Taron Johnson pounced on the ball as it entered the end zone and returned it for a touchdown to give Buffalo a 24-14 lead. Johnson now has two defensive stats this season, the other being his pick-six against the Colts.

“Guys just have a knack for getting the ball and once we see it, it’s in our minds the whole game,” Johnson said. “I feel like we did a good job of winning the ball today.”

All three of Buffalo’s takeaways came on consecutive drives; the last time this occurred in a game was on November 14, 2021 against the Jets. The Bills now have 28 takeaways this season, third-most in the NFL.

“Everyone contributed and it’s great to have everyone involved,” Williams said.
