After a disastrous 5-24 start for the New Orleans Pelicans, the team is reportedly willing to part ways with some of its stars in potential trades.

But while the Pelicans could provide some stars, others remain untouchable. According to Jovan Buha of The Athletic, “New Orleans wants to keep Trey Murphy and Herb Jones” but has “shopped” Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum. Buha also noted that the Pelicans have not explored trades for Dejounte Murray.

“Based on the reporting information, Trey Murphy and Herb Jones are at a certain level for them. They want to keep them,” said Buha (44:20). “These are two guys who will have a high price to pay to give up, similar to what LA did with Austin Reaves. Seems like Zion, Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum are the three guys they bought more in terms of their core starter, and Dejounte Murray isn’t.

Although his performance has been subpar so far, Buha says Murray will command a high price if the Pelicans include him in a trade.

“I think the price for Dejounte Murray will probably still be high,” Buha said. “I don’t think they will just sell him for an initial and equivalent salary. Personally, I would be surprised if he was turned around for a package like this.”

Williamson was again injury-prone this season, playing just six games due to a hamstring injury. Williamson played 70 games a season ago, an encouraging change from the start of his career, but with injuries once again a problem this year, the Pelicans are reportedly ready to part ways with the player they hoped he would be could lead them to the championship.

Both Ingram and McCollum were decent this year, but weren’t nearly enough to get New Orleans to championship level. Parting ways with one or both could result in valuable draft picks to start building for the future.

The Pelicans not wanting to give in to Murphy makes sense given the year the 24-year-old is having. He is averaging 19.2 points per game, the highest of his career, but remains solid defensively.

Jones, who was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team a year ago, has been just as good on defense this year, averaging 1.9 steals per game, the highest of his career.
