Georgia transfer LB Troy Bowles has committed to the Michigan Wolverines

Sherrone Moore and the Michigan Wolverines got another big addition to the transfer portal on Saturday afternoon, securing a commitment from Georgia Bulldogs linebacker Troy Bowles.

The addition of a linebacker from the transfer portal is no surprise as Michigan will reportedly move Jaishawn Barham to the sideline. Now Bowles has a chance to compete for playing time with the likes of Jimmy Rolder and Cole Sullivan.

A former top-100 prospect in the class of 2023, Bowles was listed as the No. 80 player overall and the No. 6 player from the state of Florida, according to the 247Sports roundup. He played at Jesuit High School in Tampa, and if his last name sounds familiar, it’s because he is the son of Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles.

As a member of the Bulldogs, Bowles played sparingly in his first two college seasons. In 2023, he appeared in just five games, including Georgia’s win over Florida State in the Orange Bowl. In 2024, he only appeared in Georgia’s matchups with Clemson and Tennessee Tech.

In 2022, 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins had this to say about Bowles:

One of the most complete three-down linebacker prospects to emerge from Florida recently, as he not only masters blocking and blitzing, but also covers tight ends and running backs. Has done nothing but produce since his college days at one of the Sunshine State’s more traditional high school programs, totaling over 250 tackles, 12 sacks and 5 interceptions in his first three years at the university. Intelligent player who has a good sense of what’s going on around him, which isn’t surprising considering his father is an NFL defensive coordinator. An open tackler with good leg drive who doesn’t let many ball carriers slip out of his hands. Early in his prep career, he was primarily a stand-up edge player, which in turn taught him how to win with a jab or a simple dip of the shoulder. Comfortable in zone coverage and can quickly anticipate throws. Given his initial breakout, he’s more than capable of making a difference outside of the hashes and will provide plenty of energy over the course of four quarters. He needs to cut down on the few mistakes he makes and continue to master his craft, but should be considered one of the top contributors in the 2023 class. Traits and a professional mentality suggest he can prove to be a trustworthy contributor to a top-25 program and ultimately an impact player. NFL has an advantage.

Bowles is the sixth player to move out of the portal to the Wolverines this winter. He joins Indiana wide receiver Donaven McCulley, Cal Poly offensive lineman Brady Norton, Alabama defensive tackle Damon Payne Jr. and Arkansas defensive backs TJ and Tevis Metcalf.
