O-Zone Late Night, Week 16: Raiders 19, Jaguars 14

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – This is getting a bit monotonous.

In fact, it has become very repetitive.

The Jaguars lost 19-14 to the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday at Allegiant Stadium. And while there were details that differed from many of the team’s previous 11 losses this season, the overall elements were largely the same.

Rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. is really good.

And there isn’t much else on this team.

They couldn’t make big plays in big times. The secondary isn’t good enough. The offense is not consistent enough. This time there were too many penalties at critical moments.

Again and again. Too repetitive.

Johnny, it doesn’t even hurt anymore to watch one of the bottom three teams in the league carve up the Jags’ defense. Is it over already? I’m almost looking forward to convincing myself that next year will be better…

Sunday wasn’t a particularly good day for the Jaguars. It wasn’t a particularly engaging game. It wasn’t cool. The fans didn’t like it.

This team is a dumpster fire. Run two yards, throw incomplete, throw incomplete, punt. Against the (second) worst team in the league. How did we fall into this abyss of crap?

How did they get where they were on Sunday? Backups at most skill positions on a team that wasn’t particularly good offensively, even before injuries forced the Jaguars to play backups at most skill positions. Start there. You don’t have to stay there. But start there.

Are you sure interceptions aren’t in the game plan?

Jaguars quarterback Mac Jones didn’t throw an interception on Sunday.

OK, let’s try again. We have to watch this for another three weeks?

This was again the much-hyped, sometimes premature, often entertaining first email of the game. Fans are not required to watch, but Jaguars fans had the opportunity to watch three more games in the 2024 regular season at the time of the email. At the time of publishing this O-Zone Late Night, that number has dropped to two.

Hello, KOAF. What was wrong with the uniforms the Jags wore in Vegas? That wasn’t teal they were wearing. Almost looked like Titan’s baby blue.

The Jaguars wore white jerseys and teal pants on Sunday.

Where does this team rank in the race to be the worst team you’ve ever covered? It clearly sucks, but which years were the WORST?

I don’t have the energy or inclination to think deeply enough to answer this question. I’m not saying it’s not a valid question. I’m just saying that I’m tired.

It’s your job, so I get it. But there’s nothing really new to say, is there?

Another week, another missed opportunity for a 60-yard field goal due to a turnover. Wow.

Not for the first time this season, and maybe not the last, I kind of got a 60-plus win from rookie Cam Little at the end of the first half. I would have clicked on that.

Is there any way the Jags don’t do a complete organizational reset now? I mean, the culture is back to where it was three years ago in terms of losing, and today was the worst. If not, I will express my frustration by sitting out next season. It’s gotten so bad.

There is a way. The path would be if owner Shad Khan decided to keep general manager Trent Baalke and/or head coach Doug Pederson. This seems ridiculous to many fans, especially in the “real time” of a disappointing season. I don’t know what Khan will do after the season. Few except Khan do that. But yes… there is a way.

Even our best player sucked today. 42 yards per punt? I might as well cut him off with the others.

One of them is not player Logan Cooke, although one could argue that this reaction – despite Cooke having an unusually large amount of trouble on Sunday – was perhaps a bit extreme.

I can accept missed tackles or getting hit on a few plays, but FOUR offside calls (two accepted) from lining up in the neutral zone? No, that is unacceptable, especially for three of your experienced frontline players. The team seemed unfocused. The execution was very poor in all phases of the game. John, have you canceled the season?

On Sunday it didn’t necessarily feel like a break. It felt like a team that wasn’t very good and hadn’t been in the playoffs for a long time was playing on the West Coast – three days before Christmas. This can make a team unfocused. It can damn sure lead to poor execution. These things are different than quitting.
