The Mets expect the former Dodgers to secure the two-time All-Star with a $45 million blockbuster

The New York Mets haven’t done it pretty, but they’re slowly starting to put together a pitching staff.

With the additions of Clay Holmes, Frankie Montas and Griffin Canning, the Mets at least have enough depth to field an Opening Day starting rotation if needed. But it wouldn’t be particularly exciting.

Other than Kodai Senga, the Mets currently don’t have any pitchers with the potential to be a number one starter. They don’t seem interested in spending big to find such a leg of free agency, but a short-term deal on a high-risk, high-reward leg could be in their cards.

Especially when that arm comes from the team that knocked them out of the playoffs, the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Recently, Zach Pressnell of Newsweek predicted that the Mets would sign former Dodgers two-time All-Star Walker Buehler to a three-year, $45 million contract.

“The New York Mets have made a living turning downed and retired pitchers back into the arms of the big leagues. That’s what they did in 2024 with Sean Manaea and Luis Severino,” Pressnell said. “Adding Buehler would be the largest and most rewarding rebuilding project for the Mets.”

“If Buehler fulfills his potential, the Mets would add a right-hander who could get Cy Young votes. If Buehler looks anything like the pitcher who finished the 2024 postseason with Los Angeles, he would be a bargain at $15 million this year.”

Buehler, 30, has had a fantastic career so far with a 43-22 record and a 3.27 ERA. But his difficult 2024 regular season (5.38 ERA in 14 starts after returning from Tommy John surgery) likely killed his chances at a nine-figure contract.

However, Buehler showed in the postseason as he pitched 13 straight scoreless innings to close out his year and shut out the New York Yankees in the final three outs of the Major League Baseball season. He now owns a 0.48 ERA in 19 innings in the World Series.

If the Mets can get the playoff version of Buehler for most of the regular season, they will be in much better shape than the current picture painted by their roster. But first they had to convince him to come to Queens.
