Burt, a saltwater crocodile, was reportedly 5.1 m long and weighed 700 kg and had been at Crocosaurus Cove since 2008. Named after movie star Burt Reynolds, it was caught on the Reynolds River in 1980 and subsequently found by filmmakers at a crocodile farm, said Penny Priest, executive director of Crocosaurus Cove. In Crocodile Dundee, Burt is seen in a scene where American reporter Sue Charlton (played by Linda Kozlowski) is saved from a crocodile attack by Mick Dundee (Paul Hogan). While much of the sequence was filmed with models, Priest said, “The scene…was actually filmed with the movements of Burt and him jumping out of the water.”

Burt also served as a visual effects model for the 2007 killer crocodile film Rogue and in 2018 became Australia’s answer to Paul the octopus, who correctly predicted the outcome of the World Cup final by biting a French flag rather than a Croatian one attached chicken pieces.

Crocosaurus Cove said Burt’s “fiery temperament” meant he was a “confirmed bachelor.” Priest added: “Burt was a force of nature, he was unique and had a great personality.”
