Not only is Neil Cavuto a great TV personality, he’s also an even better friend

Neil Cavuto wasn’t just a popular Fox News host — he helped me through one of my darkest moments.

About 15 years ago, I was a reporter at CNBC when I got an offer to work for the fledgling Fox Business Network and appear on television with Neil Cavuto.

I couldn’t miss it.

Cavuto is, of course, an icon of television journalism.

He covered the stock market crash of 1987, wars and IPOs.

He interviewed movie stars and presidents.

I was able to work closely with him, covering breaking news on his shows Fox Business and Fox News, and learning what fair and balanced journalism is all about.

He was the ultimate straight shooter.

Yes, he will inform you if you have done something he deemed inappropriate, as I can fully attest.

This also applies to Donald Trump, who was often annoyed by Neil’s behavior and criticized his sometimes unstable governing style.

After 28 years at Fox, Neil performed his final show on Thursday.

He is 66 years old and has struggled with health problems despite working all day and even on weekends.

I suspect he’s not done with our job yet – and that’s a very good thing.

I remember telling Neil a few years ago that I had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Neil is also a cancer survivor.

He encouraged me to approach the situation as he has with his health problems over the years, as a journalist, telling viewers and readers of my Post column the need for early detection, the treatments available and the way explained how it all saved my life.

So that’s exactly what I did.

People still thank me for helping them get through similar circumstances.

I tell them to thank Neil Cavuto.
