Burt, the star crocodile Crocodile DundeeHe passed away peacefully over the weekend. He was…well, no one can say for sure how old he was, but Crocosaurus Cove, the herpetarium and aquarium in Darwin, Australia that has served as Burt’s home since 2008, released a statement revealing his age to be more than 100 years old is estimated to be 90 years old.

It marks “the end of an incredible era,” said the statement released Monday. He is described as “a confirmed bachelor” with a “fiery temperament” and “embodyed the raw and untamed spirit of the saltwater crocodile,” it said.

According to the organization’s website, Burt was 16 feet 8 inches long and weighed more than 1,500 pounds. It was named after actor Burt Reynolds and the Reynolds River, where it was found in 1980, said Penny Priest, executive director of Crocosaurus Cove Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Burt appeared alongside Paul Hogan (the titular Crocodile Dundee) and Linda Kozlowski in Crocodile Dundee. In the film, Sue Carlton (Kozlowski), a New York journalist, travels to Australia to interview Mike Dundee (Hogan), but is so taken with him that she brings him back to the Big Apple.

Priest told ABC of Burt’s big moment on screen: “The scene where Linda Kozlowski fills up her water bottle was actually filmed with the movements of him and Burt jumping out of the water. Obviously he wasn’t in the whole scene, but that’s where he made his debut.”

“Burt was truly one of a kind,” Cove’s statement said. “He wasn’t just a crocodile; he was a force of nature and a reminder of the power and majesty of these incredible creatures. While his personality could be challenging, it was also what made him so memorable and beloved by those he worked with.” He and the thousands who visited him over the years marveled at his impressive stature and his impressive presence, especially at feeding time.

In honor of Burt, Crocosaurus Cove plans to place a memorial sign at the site where his attraction once stood. Read the full statement above.
