Baker Mayfield wants Mike Evans to reach 1,000 yards to continue the WR’s streak

Buccaneers receiver Mike Evans has never had fewer than 1,000 receiving yards in his career. Ten consecutive 1,000-yard seasons to start a career is an NFL record.

After Evans missed three games and most of the rest due to his hamstring injury, it seemed like a great chance for the five-time Pro Bowler to continue his winning streak.

However, Evans caught nine passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday’s win over the Chargers, giving him 749 yards on the season.

He now needs to average 84 yards over the last three games to reach 1,000 yards for the 11th straight season.

“I think about it more than Mike,” Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield said Wednesday via video from ESPN’s Jenna Laine. “But he helped himself. He put a small piece in it. All in all, winning is the most important thing, but it is a big part of this offense. He makes a big difference in the explosive aspect of this offense, trying to somehow get him the ball but not force it. That’s not what this crime is about. Let’s leave it to the defense to determine where the ball should go based on the coverage and what they are doing. But yeah, I still move Mike around. He’s still our No. 1 man. If it happens, it happens.”

In 2017, Evans had 1,001 receiving yards, which was the closest he came to ending the streak. He has 12,429 receiving yards for his career.
