Michigan Football expects QB to be locked out of the transfer portal

The Michigan Wolverines played with former Maryland quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. and missed out on him despite initially predicting he would sign him in the transfer portal.

On Monday, On3’s EJ Holland predicted that Michigan would sign former Fresno State quarterback Mikey Keene. The 5-foot-10, 220-pound player visited Ann Arbor last weekend and is familiar with new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, who coached him when both were at UCF.

Holland also reported that Michigan may return to former Baylor quarterback Dequan Finn if things don’t work out with Keene for some reason.

Last season, Keene threw for 2,892 yards, 18 touchdowns and 11 interceptions for Fresno State. Entering his fifth collegiate season, he has 8,245 career passing yards, 65 touchdowns and 28 interceptions with a 67.8 completion percentage.

Keene could be a good bridge quarterback for true five-star freshman Bryce Underwood. Similar to Cade McNamara and JJ McCarthy for the Wolverines in the 2021 season, Keene could serve as a veteran at the position while also accompanying the eventual starter in Underwood. We’ll likely still see plenty of Underwood on the field in 2025, but at this point Keene could be the favorite to start for Michigan next fall.

All in all, no matter who the starter is, fans should be happy that the Wolverines are completely remodeling their quarterback room for the 2025 season. With Underwood on the team, Keene potentially transferring, Jadyn Davis entering his second season, and Davis Warren also potentially returning, Michigan will undoubtedly be in a better position at the quarterback position than it was in 2024.
