Temperatures are expected to bring roller coaster rides across the US this week

A chaotic Monday morning commute across much of the East Coast is causing a rollercoaster of temperatures across the country this week.

Rain fell along the I-95 corridor from Washington, DC to New York early Monday morning, with freezing rain and snow farther north in New Jersey, upstate New York and western Connecticut. Mixed precipitation left roads covered in ice, making commuting difficult in parts of Connecticut and Rhode Island.

1,200 feet (380 m) of fog is seen on the Iowa Interstate on December 16, 2024.

Elsewhere, heavy rain and thunderstorms will move across the Ohio River Valley on Monday, with the possibility that the storms will be strong enough to produce severe weather with high winds, hail or even a tornado.

The system will move eastward during the day, reaching Pittsburgh at 2 p.m., Buffalo at 5 p.m., Philadelphia at 7 p.m. and New York at 9 p.m., where it will rain most of the night.

Boston will see rain until about 8 a.m. Tuesday, and Maine residents will continue to see rain until 10 a.m. Tuesday. The next burst of rain for the Northeast arrives Wednesday afternoon and should fall Thursday morning.

Forecasters say there will be more rain Monday evening in a separate system over the Midwest from Indiana to Missouri and Arkansas.

Forecasts show that after the rain there will be a warming and then a cooling of temperatures within a few days.
