How the addition of Mikey Keene affects Michigan’s Bryce Underwood QB room

Keene started the 2024 season opener against Michigan, with his team losing 30-10 to the Wolverines. He also played under new offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey at UCF in 2022, so there is a familiarity between him and the program.

“Let’s start with how it happened,” Sayfie said. “In the last week after Billy Edwards Jr. decided to go to Wisconsin, a few options emerged – he’s the Maryland transfer. Three came about. It was Dequan Finn from Baylor, who also played at Toledo and made a name for himself there. Nevada’s Brendon Lewis was also targeted, he ends up in Memphis. And then they prioritize Mikey Keene over Dequan Finn and decide to go in that direction.

“This is a guy who is familiar with Chip Lindsey as he tries to install this offense here at Michigan, someone he knows really well and is naturally being scouted for having him as his quarterback at UCF. “So I think the fit there makes a lot of sense, even if you still have some questions – which we’ll talk about – about him moving up a level, from the Mountain West to the Big Ten.”

“The conversation around the portal QB needs to be less about what you thought Michigan would do — from a fan perspective — and more about what was realistic and why it was a fit.

“I think Michigan fans were hoping that the money shot that Bryce Underwood landed would help them land a Miller Moss, a Kaidn Salter, a John Mateer, whatever. Shoot for the stars.

“And we’ve had this conversation a few times: When you open door No. 1 and that includes having Bryce Underwood at quarterback, which is the preferred option, I think that locks off the upper echelon of what you can do “Maybe we could have done it differently.”
