1 million Americans receive checks from the IRS. How to find out if you are eligible

One million taxpayers will automatically receive a payment from the IRS in the coming weeks, the agency recently announced.

The checks, which can be up to $1,400, are aimed at those who did not claim the recovery credit on their 2021 tax return.

“These payments are an example of our commitment to going the extra mile for taxpayers,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a statement.

How to find out if you are eligible

The payments will be sent automatically to those who qualify, the IRS said. No action is required.

This includes taxpayers who filed a 2021 tax return but either left the Refund Credit section blank or filled it out incorrectly when they were actually entitled to receive the money.

“Looking at our internal data, we found that one million taxpayers failed to take advantage of this complex credit even though they were actually eligible,” Werfel said. “To minimize hassle and make this money available to eligible taxpayers, we are making these payments automatically, meaning these individuals do not have to go through the extensive process of filing an amended tax return to receive them.”

Recipients will receive a letter by the end of January with the notification and the payment itself, either by check or direct deposit. Checks were sent out earlier this month.

The money will be deposited into the bank account listed on the individual’s 2023 tax return. When the account is closed, a check will be sent to the address on file with the agency.

If someone didn’t file a 2021 tax return, they could still receive this payment, the IRS said, but they must first file a tax return by April 15, 2025.

What you should know about the discount

Americans received three stimulus payments from the federal government during the coronavirus pandemic. Two were sent under the Trump administration in 2020 and one under the Biden administration in 2021.

The first check was for $1,200 for eligible taxpayers, the second was for $600 and the third was for $1,400.

Most Americans received checks, the government said, but those who did not receive the full amount could apply for a refund credit.

The IRS estimates that about $2.4 billion will be sent to Americans in the coming weeks.
