The FDA puts Costco’s egg recall at the highest risk level because of salmonella fears

According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), hundreds of thousands of eggs sold at Costcos that were part of a recall issued last month have a “reasonable” likelihood that consumption could result in serious health problems or death due to contamination with salmonella can lead).

On Friday, the FDA classified Handsome Brook Farms eggs sold at Costco stores in the southeastern United States as the highest risk level, Category 1.

Category 1, the FDA notes on its website, means it is a recall that has “a reasonable likelihood that use of or exposure to an infringing product will result in serious health consequences or death.” .

Last month, more than 10,000 cartons of eggs sold under Costco’s Kirkland Signature brand were voluntarily recalled over concerns they could be contaminated with salmonella, although no one had become ill from the potentially tainted eggs at the time.

The eggs were sold at 25 Costco stores beginning November 22, 2024 in Alabama, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Handsome Brook Farms launched the recall after discovering that eggs that were “not intended for retail distribution were instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging.”

“Additional supply chain controls and retraining will be implemented to prevent a recurrence,” the company said.

FOX Business has reached out to Handsome Brook Farms for comment on the FDA’s serious rating of the recall.

The recall only applies to devices with Julian code 327 and an expiration date of January 5, 2025.

“No other products are affected by this recall,” the FDA said.

Salmonella is a food-borne illness that causes fever, diarrhea and nausea and can be life-threatening in the very young, old and immunocompromised.
