Should the Chargers take a risky gamble on the recently cut former Pro Bowl WR?

Should the Chargers take a risky gamble on the recently cut former Pro Bowl WR?

The Los Angeles Chargers are currently on the rise, but wideout remains an obvious offseason need.

Therefore, Diontae Johnson needs to be mentioned again.

Againbecause Johnson had just been released by the Baltimore Ravens after a brief, chaotic stay with the team, having been acquired at the deadline a month earlier.

Johnson didn’t see much playing time with the Ravens and then apparently refused to play in a game when asked, resulting in a suspension and time off from the team.

Before joining the Ravens, Johnson caught 30 passes for 357 yards and three touchdowns in seven appearances in Carolina. During his five years in Pittsburgh, he averaged nearly 78 catches per season.

The question now is whether the Chargers should make a move. Ladd McConkey is a breakout star at wideout, leading the team with 69 catches for 960 yards and five scores while battling multiple injuries.

Otherwise, no one has managed to create separation against man coverage. Former first-round pick Quentin Johnston has flashed but continues to struggle with drop issues. Joshua Palmer has been considered a trade candidate in reports. No tight end has stepped up.

At this point, however, Johnson’s baggage may be too much. For better or worse, the Chargers’ current group has been good enough for nine wins and counting, plus a likely playoff spot. By the time Johnson learned the offense, it might no longer matter.

Well, next offseason? After the damage Johnson has done to his stocks before he probably settles for a prove-it deal? That could be something the Chargers want to consider.
