Michigan signs transfer portal QB Mikey Keene

The Michigan Wolverines have landed their quarterback out of the transfer portal in former Fresno State signal-caller Mikey Keenewho is eligible to play for another season.

Keene, who we mentioned as a potential candidate on December 5thwas a three-star recruit in the 2021 class and played his first two seasons at UCF before transferring to Fresno State in 2023, where he threw for 2,976 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. This season he threw for 2,892 yards with 18 touchdowns and 11 picks. Keene started the season opener at Michigan by going 22-of-36 for 235 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions, including a pick-six to Will Johnson, so there is at least some direct and personal evaluation of him.

“He’s not as big as a lot of quarterbacks, but he gets the ball out quick,” Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore said during his press conference before Fresno State in Week 1. “He’s mobile. The offense is entirely his fault. In order for us to be successful against it, it is important how we stop it and how we contain it. He will make his throws. He’s going to do some really good things. He’s going to be able to move outside the box, so we have to keep him under control and confuse him a little bit with our coverages and the things we do and make it messy for him because it really gets through to him. When he’s healthy for them, he handles the ball really well and controls the offense, and you can see the offense has a lot more confidence in the game.”

Keene could be the veteran bridge quarterback who could also pave the way for a graceful transition to the Bryce Underwood Epoch.

“There are a lot of positions that we’re deepening and adding spots as we fill them,” head coach Sherrone Moore said of the program’s portal approach at QB. “I guess you guys will have to see the details, but we’ll definitely look in the portal for a quarterback and go from there.”

“(We want) experience, a guy who’s going to be a great leader, a great teammate, obviously can play, and yeah, he’s got to be a great passer. “That’s got to be that one piece.”
