Christopher Nolan’s next film is an adaptation of Homer’s The Odyssey.

The speculation can finally come to an end. Universal took to social media on Monday to give film fans around the world a gift: the first official description of Christopher Nolan’s next film. It says The Odyssey This is an adaptation of Homer’s poem.

Christopher Nolan’s next film The Odyssey is a mythical action epic shot around the world using brand new IMAX film technology. “The film brings Homer’s quintessential saga to IMAX theater screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026,” the statement reads.

Written by Homer centuries before the birth of Christ: The Odyssey is the sequel to The Illiad. It is about Odysseus, a Greek hero who travels home after the Trojan War. It’s a sprawling adventure with mythical creatures, battles, and more, a story that has been adapted in seemingly every medium and era. But speaking of Nolan, you can be sure that this will be the biggest, most faithful and most comprehensive adaptation yet. It’s also a far cry from previous rumors about the film, such as that it was about helicopter cops or that this website reported that it was a historical film about vampires. Hey, at least it’s a historical film.

Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson and Lupita Nyong’o star, but there’s no word on who is playing who. But let’s speculate a little. We think – and this comes entirely from my io9 colleague Sabina Graves – that it would make sense to have Matt Damon as Odysseus, Holland as his son Telemachus, Hathaway as Penelope, Theron as Athena, Pattinson as Poseidon (or the Cyclops). see. , Nyong’o as Circe and Zendaya as Calypso. But here too this is pure speculation.

And what is the “all-new IMAX film technology” the studio is touting? Sounds exciting. But not as exciting as Nolan envisioning the biggest story of his entire career and perhaps his second Oscar.

The Odysseydirected by Christopher Nolans opens on July 17, 2026.
