The collapse occurred at 12:45 a.m. PT Monday “as a result of very strong waves impacting it,” Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley said during a news conference.

Two of the people who entered the water were rescued while the third swam to safety, he said.

“We believe that everyone who went into the water is now accounted for and is safe,” Keeley said.

Officials said there were no visitors on the wharf, which was closed to the public, at the time of the collapse.

The wharf will remain closed until further notice and its structural integrity is being assessed, officials said.

According to Tony Elliot, the city of Santa Cruz’s director of parks and recreation, the city’s wharf underwent a $4 million rehabilitation following the storm’s impacts.

About 150 feet at the end of the wharf collapsed, including a toilet and part of the renovation work, he said. Equipment from the construction also went into the water, he said.

A city project manager and two contracted engineers who were monitoring the wharf when it collapsed went into the water, officials said. No serious injuries were reported, officials said.

Because of debris in the water and high surf, people are advised to stay away from this area and the coastlines.

The National Weather Service in the Bay Area warned that “dangerous and life-threatening beach conditions,” including rough seas and crashing waves of up to 60 feet, are forecast for beaches along the Pacific coast through Tuesday.
