“‘The Odyssey’ Confirmed as Director’s New Film for Universal”

Tom Holland, listen up: Christopher Nolan’s new film for Universal is The Odysseyan adaptation of the epic poem written by Homer around the 8th century BC. The studio has revealed it.

“Christopher Nolan’s next film, The Odyssey, is a mythical action epic shot around the world using brand-new IMAX film technology,” the studio announced in a message sent to X on Monday. “The film brings Homer’s quintessential saga to IMAX screens for the first time.” Time and hits theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.

Homer’s ancient Greek poem tells the story of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War, exploring themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning, and fighting against the divine will. The story contains iconic episodes such as his encounters with the cyclops Polyphemus, the sirens and the witch-goddess Kirke, culminating in his reunion with his wife Penelope.

Although this would be the most notable adaptation of the text to date, the poem had previously been adapted into the 1954 Italian film Ulyssesdirected by Mario Camerini and starring Kirk Douglas, as well as the 1997 miniseries The Odysseydirected by Andrei Konchalovsky and starring Armand Assante. Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche can currently be seen in Uberto Pasolini’s roles as Odysseus and Penelope The returnwhich Bleecker Street released earlier this month following the film’s TIFF reveal. The Coen brothers’ poem was also inspired by the poem. O brother, where are you?published in 2000.

As previously announced, Nolan’s latest film will star Matt Damon, Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron. The story the filmmaker has settled on is a far cry from the rumored themes he will tackle in the future, encompassing everything from vampires to helicopter pilots.

The Odyssey Filming is expected to begin early next year. This is Nolan’s second film for Universal, following his Best Picture winner OppenheimerThe 2026 date corresponds to the window often reserved by this filmmaker, as was the case with his historical drama with Cillian Murphy.
