Congressman Cleaver criticizes USPS for lowering delivery standards in a new letter

WASHINGTON, DC (KCTV) – U.S. Representative Emanuel Cleaver II and Michigan Representative Jack Bergman shared a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on December 23rd criticizing the leadership of the US Postal Service (USPS) for lowering the Delivery standards for fiscal year 2025 disapproved.

With millions of Americans relying on timely deliveries, the letter outlined the need for DeJoy to address these service issues within his agency.

The letter said:

“Instead of directly addressing the problems that caused the agency to miss its fiscal year 2024 goals, USPS has now chosen to lower its service standards – hiding its shortcomings, deflecting public criticism and likely paving the way for further reductions in service “To pave the way for postal service for our communities.” This decision circumvents accountability and improvement, undermines public trust, and sets a troubling precedent for future performance evaluations.”

Congressman Cleaver has raised various concerns with the Postal Service about its performance issues since 2022. Many Kansas City residents had not received mail under Congress’s requirement to provide six-day mail delivery.

Most recently, in June 2024, Congressman Cleaver co-authored the bipartisan Postal Processing Protecting Act with Representative Harriet Hageman of Wyoming, which requires the Postal Service to protect mail processing centers in communities across the country by mandating individual studies on the consequences of closing these facilities.
