The 76ers’ Joel Embiid was eliminated in a chaotic first half against the Spurs

PHILADELPHIA – Disgust at the officiating left 76ers fans at the Wells Fargo Center booed a T-shirt present near the end of a chaotic opening half Monday night that saw Joel Embiid sent off after two technical fouls for making a charge call against San Antonio’s Victor had argued Wembanyama.

As Wembanyama headed toward the basket to defend in transition, Embiid crashed into the 20-year-old French phenom, knocking him to the ground. Embiid was whistled for an offensive foul with 2:59 left in the first half.

Embiid immediately stood up and voiced his displeasure with the call, which led to a technical foul from referee Jenna Schroeder as the center headed toward the Philadelphia bench.

As he approached the bench, an angry Embiid stormed toward the referees and was restrained by teammate Kyle Lowry, coach Nick Nurse and several assistants as Schroeder committed another technical foul, resulting in Embiid’s second ejection of his career. Embiid was close to Schroeder, but it was not clear from replays whether he had made contact with the referee.

Wearing a mask while playing in just his second game since suffering a sinus fracture, Embiid scored nine points and three rebounds in 14:22, shooting 2 of 8. He entered the game averaging 22.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists.

It was Schroeder’s second ejection of the quarter, although the first was overturned after a bizarre sequence in which reserve center Andre Drummond was sent off for an apparent foul on Wembanyama, marking his second foul on the Spurs star within seconds was.

Drummond was whistled for a technical foul with 8:13 left in the first half after he pushed Wembanyama to the ground as the two fought under the basket. Seconds later, Drummond appeared to push Wembanyama to the ground again.

Drummond was initially whistled for his second technical foul and sent off. However, after a video review, officials lifted the ejection and allowed him to return to the game. They then initially assessed Wembanyam with a technical foul for flopping. Philadelphia’s Tyrese Maxey shot and made a free throw and the point went on the scoreboard, but the referees overturned the technical flop as “unsportsmanlike,” removed the point and restarted the game.

Drummond, who had already made his way to the dressing room, was seen on the broadcast putting his jersey back on as he made his way through the tunnel to the pitch.

From that point on, the Philadelphia fans booed Wembanyama relentlessly every time he touched the ball. The 76ers would win 111-106.
