Winter weather threat looms from Washington to Philadelphia as more snow hits the Northeast

WASHINGTON — A weather system that grips the Upper Midwest on Monday will move into the Northeast overnight and into Christmas Eve, bringing more snow to areas from Wisconsin to Maine and causing millions of white Christmases across the northern United States

The wintry precipitation could even create slippery travel conditions in major cities along the Interstate 95 corridor in the Mid-Atlantic on Tuesday morning.

This came just days after a strong clipper system and coastal depression dumped several inches of snow from the Upper Midwest to the Northeast, and now the FOX Forecast Center is already tracking this next snow-producing system as it moves through many of these areas.

An additional 1 to 3 inches could fall in parts of the Upper Midwest and Northeast by Tuesday, with higher amounts in northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine.

“There’s some moisture coming through, and that means more snow,” said FOX weather meteorologist Craig Herrera. “The higher elevations … the White Mountains, the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks could see pretty decent amounts of snow, 8 to 12 inches of new snow.”

Winter weather advisories are posted from Wisconsin to Maine and across parts of the Mid-Atlantic from West Virginia to New Jersey.

Cities like Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia are included in these winter weather warnings because of the threat of freezing rain, sleet and light snow Tuesday morning that could lead to icy roads.

Before the system reaches the Northeast, icy conditions may develop in the Great Lakes region on Monday.

Freezing rain and drizzle could continue into Monday afternoon before turning to snow in the Green Bay, Wisconsin area. Slippery conditions are possible on portions of Interstate 90 and Interstate 35.

The FOX Forecast Center said ice will have limited impact on communities around Lake Michigan, including Green Bay, Chicago, Milwaukee and Kalamazoo, Michigan.
