American Airlines ground stop affecting all flights canceled after technical problems reported on Christmas Eve morning: FAA

CHICAGO— The Federal Aviation Administration announced Tuesday that American Airlines’ ground stop was lifted for all flights on Christmas Eve morning.

The airline said a technical issue affected its flights on Tuesday morning.

“Our teams are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and we apologize to our customers for the inconvenience,” American said in a statement.

For the record-breaking number of Americans who will be traveling this holiday season, any disruption would be unwelcome. The Transportation Security Administration said it expects to screen nearly 40 million travelers from Dec. 19 to Jan. 2, a 6.2% increase from 2023.

American Airlines said Dec. 27 and Dec. 20 would be its busiest and second-busiest days, respectively, during the holiday season, which began Dec. 18.

Customers on social media began complaining early Tuesday morning that some flights were returning to their gates and delays were about 90 minutes.

American Airlines (AAL) shares fell nearly 3% in premarket trading.
