The Food and Drug Administration has classified a recall of eggs sold at Costco as Level I, the highest level available.

Even though the eggs weren’t sold at any Costco in Florida and residents are traveling out of state for the holidays, it’s worth double-checking what you’re eating or using. The eggs were sold in several states in the Southeast.

The reason for the recall of the eggs was possible contamination with salmonella.

Which eggs are being recalled?

On November 27, a voluntary recall was issued for 10,800 cartons of Handsome Brook Farms eggs sold under the Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised brand.

The recall applies to 24-packs of Kirkland Signature Organic Willow Raised 24-pack eggs with UPC number 9661910680. The cartons are marked with Julian code 327 and a best-before date of January 5, 2025.

Why are Kirkland eggs recalled?

Handsome Brook Farms has voluntarily issued a recall of eggs sold under the Kirkland Signature brand name because they may be contaminated with salmonella, the company’s statement said.

“Eggs from a positive salmonella environment were shipped to retail establishments for distribution,” the FDA said.

“The recall was initiated after the company discovered that eggs not intended for retail use were instead packaged and distributed in retail packaging. Additional controls and retraining in the supply chain will be implemented to prevent a recurrence,” the company said in November.

The FDA classifies the egg recall as Level 1. What is Level I?

The FDA has classified the recall as Level 1.

A Level 1 recall – also called Class 1 – is “a situation in which there is a reasonable likelihood that use of or exposure to an infringing product will result in serious health consequences or death,” the FDA said on its website .

Where were the recalled Costco eggs sold?

The Kirkland Signature Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs were distributed to 25 Costco stores in the following states starting November 22nd:
