Costco egg recall: Kirkland signature cartons recalled over salmonella fears, deemed highest risk level, FDA says

According to the Food and Drug Administration, a recall of organic eggs sold at Costco is now considered the highest risk for possible salmonella contamination.

The FDA defines it as a Class I recall, meaning there is a “reasonable probability” that the recalled product “will cause serious health consequences or death.”

Last month, Handsome Brook Farms, a New York-based organic egg supplier, announced that the organic, grass-fed eggs were sold in 24 pieces under the Kirkland Signature brand.

The eggs were distributed to 25 Costco locations in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee starting Nov. 22, the company said.

The recalled units include numbers 327 and P1363 and the best before date is January 5, 2025.

The company said the eggs were not intended for retailers but were incorrectly packaged and distributed. To prevent something like this from happening again, additional controls and retraining have been introduced, the company said.

According to Handsome Brook Farms, no illnesses have been reported related to the recall.

Salmonella can cause serious infections, especially in children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms may include fever, diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting.

People who purchased the recalled eggs should throw them away or stop using them and return them to Costco for a full refund.

This egg recall is separate from another recent outbreak of salmonella in eggs that resulted in a reported 93 illnesses and 34 hospitalizations in 12 states. These eggs from Milo’s poultry farms can no longer be found on store shelves.
