Blockbuster films are worth the hype, say moviegoers

After gorging themselves on turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes, some Central Iowa residents headed to the movies to end Thanksgiving Day. There were two showings of “Wicked” and two showings of “Gladiator II” at the Varsity Cinema on Thursday night. The double feature has taken on the name “Glicked”. Tech executive Graham Bechman said people are excited to see the films. “Having big movies like this brings in a lot of revenue and allows us to do the kind of special events and programming that we really enjoy doing here,” Bechman said. Varsity Cinema reopened in 2022 after a four-year renovation. Bechman said dual functions help keep the lights on. “We did better than we ever expected,” he said. “People are really happy to have us back, people are engaged and enjoy coming here.” KCCI spoke to families at the cinema who said they were looking for a way to spend time with family after the big celebration “We don’t go to the movies often, especially together,” Clive resident Kelly Hinners told KCCI. She was at the movie theater with her family, including her nephew, who was in town from Omaha, Nebraska, for Thanksgiving. “Actually, I saw ‘Gladiator II’ somewhere on Bargain Tuesday this week and now I’m watching ‘Wicked,'” she said. “I did ‘Glicked.'” Varsity Cinema said they hope to continue showing the two films for several more weeks as long as people continue to buy tickets.
