Sonic The Hedgehog 3’s dark ending explained

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is the best entry in a trilogy that got better with each part, marking the end of Shadow’s sad story and setting a new direction for another sequel.

Warning – spoilers ahead

What happens at the end of Sonic The Hedgehog 3?

Sonic3 introduces fan-favorite anti-hero Shadow the Hedgehog (played by a perfectly cast Keanu Reeves) and presents Sonic (Ben Schwartz) with his biggest challenge yet.

Shadow plays a similar role to Venom in Spiderman, acting as Sonic’s darker, edgier mirror. He’s Sonic with a terrible father figure and a dead sister, a turbocharged hedgehog who has only seen the sharp edges of the world.

Shadow is clearly stronger than Sonic and the others in this film, but chooses not to deal fatal blows to Sonic’s crew. However, Shadow doesn’t hold back when he attacks Tom (James Marsden), mistaking him for an enemy and seriously injuring him.

Tom’s injury awakens something in Sonic; Despite Knuckles’ (Idris Elba) advice, Sonic uses the Chaos Emeralds to get to his superstate.

Meanwhile, Ivo Robotnick has teamed up with that terrible father figure, his grandfather Gerald, who is also something of a dark mirror (Jim Carrey plays both characters and clearly has a lot of fun switching between them).

As Ivo orbits the Earth aboard Gerald’s space travel superweapon, he eventually realizes that his dear old grandpa is even more disturbed than he is and is trying to destroy the entire planet.

Shadow, who is just as young as Sonic, is something of a grieving child, willing to support genocide to avenge his fallen friend Maria Robotnik (Alyla Browne).

Gerald and Ivo are dealing with one Rick and MortyStyle combat that involves a lot of metal reinforcement. While the two scientists fight, Shadow and Sonic fight Dragon Ball In space, both use the power of emeralds to create superstates.

Shadow fights back, but ultimately believes he deserves Sonic’s revenge, realizing that Sonic shares the pain of losing a loved one. Like Shadow, Sonic’s pain allows him to reach his worst fighting state and manages to defeat Shadow, who greets his death.

Sonic spares Shadow and the two form an alliance, with Shadow realizing the importance of protecting the Earth in Maria’s memory.

Do Doctor Robotnik and Shadow die in Sonic The Hedgehog 3?

Ivo quickly defeats Gerald and, with the help of Sonic’s friends, directs the laser away from Earth. However, with the weapon malfunctioning and still posing a threat, Shadow and Ivo team up to save Earth from the subsequent explosion.

Sonic and his friends make it back to Earth safely (and Tom survives), but Robotnik and Shadow sacrifice themselves to get the weapon to a safe distance, which is apparently consumed by the explosion.

What’s notable is that we don’t see a full death or corpses on screen, so the characters could easily have been brought back for a sequel since Shadow had the ability to teleport and save them both.

If not, both had a great ending.

Their return depends on whether Keanu Reeves and Jim Carrey return to their roles or not. Reeves seemed to enjoy playing Shadow, describing the experience as “exhilarating” and could be persuaded to return.

Carrey talked about retiring from acting afterward Sonic2however, told the Associated Press that he had returned Sonic3 because “I bought a lot of stuff and honestly I need the money.”

There may be a chance that Carrey could return for a sequel, as he told Comicbook.com: “I said I’d like to retire, but I think I said more ‘power rest.'” Because as soon as you or a good idea comes to a group of people you really enjoyed working with, things just change.”

Paramount recently announced a fourth sound The film is scheduled for 2027.

What will happen in Sonic The Hedgehog 4?

The mid-credits scene from Sonic3 shows Sonic racing ahead and surrounded by darkness before facing Metal Sonic, his robot clone. Like Shadow, Metal Sonic is a popular antagonist and a mirror of Sonic.

This scene offers a different take on Metal, showing that there is an entire army of Metal Sonics, but they are all taken down fairly easily after a surprise appearance from Amy wielding her signature hammer.

Amy is another popular character, often portrayed as Sonic’s lover and fellow heroine. However, it is unclear whether she travels through time or whether Sonic traveled through time.

The film’s writers were cautious about confirming details, describing the mid-credits scene as “raising a flag,” but the potential for time travel opens the door for another character from the Sonic franchise – Silver the Hedgehog.

Silver is from the future and has telekinetic powers, so there is a possibility that he could join the ever-growing circle of anthropomorphic animals that live in the future sound Films.

The large selection sound Games and comics on the market have many, many storylines for future films, and Sonic3 Director Jeff Fowler expects Paramount to “continue to expand the world and family of Sonic characters.”

Fowler seems interested in expanding, telling Variety, “I feel like we’re just starting to get going.”
