Harry Potter fans demand controversial demotion of Voldemort

Some Harry Potter fans have criticized a controversial downgrade of Voldemort by Warner Bros. As Harry Potter fans await word on who will play Voldemort in the upcoming HBO TV series, some fans have been reflecting on how well the films have adapted the character. Most Harry Potter fans agree that Ralph Fiennes delivered an iconic portrayal of the character, although the character was sometimes let down by other aspects that were beyond the actor’s control. For example, the lack of screen time.

When the Harry Potter films originally hit theaters, one of the many topics of conversation was how Voldemort was gradually made less and less scary. Whether this was intentional or not who knows, but the character’s appearance has undoubtedly evolved over time. And at the time it was noticed and many Harry Potter fans thought that the character was made less scary and ultimately less compelling. And it seems that fans are still okay with it, even many years later.

Especially when Voldemort makes his debut in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, it’s a scary moment. There are several factors to this, but the design of the character is undoubtedly one of the biggest factors. In Goblet of Fire Voldemort looks less human than in later films. Furthermore, the character loses his sinister qualities over time and becomes almost campy in later films.

In keeping with this, one of the top posts on the Harry Potter Reddit page this week is a post that identifies this downgrade and notes that the character was scarier in the fourth Harry Potter film than in subsequent films.

“The kids just saw it. They freaked out and had to turn that part off,” reads the top comment on the post. “Everything about that Voldemort moment was terrifying compared to the films that followed. His features, the way he was created and his actions are just savage and he is out for blood.”

Another popular comment added: “Yes, they have his design right here. In the fifth part he seemed too pearly and in the last two he seemed too human and just seemed weird for some reason.”

Elsewhere in the comments, Harry Potter fans point out that in this moment in Goblet of Fire, it’s not just Voldemort that’s great, but the entire scene. And that’s true. The graveyard scene is not just a sequel scene, it is one of the best scenes in the film.

“The graveyard sequence is a masterclass in adaptation, which is funny since most of the fourth film is among the weakest,” read a third comment. “It’s very close to what I imagined when I first read the book. The tone, the visuals, everything is really some of the best work they’ve done in the entire series, in my humble opinion.”

This discussion raises an interesting question: How will the HBO series realize Voldemort? This alone should clarify the tone of the series and show how much the series aims to appeal to children rather than adults.
