Woman says suspect in Officer Michael Horan’s murder was an Instacart shopper

She thought her buyer may have witnessed the shooting, but it turned out he was the suspect.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Greensboro woman said the suspect in the killing of Greensboro Officer Michael Horan was her Instacart delivery driver.

On Monday, December 23rd, a deadly grocery store incident occurred on Lawndale Drive. Sheila Gonzalez said she ordered a few items from Food Lion through Instacart around 9:30 a.m. Monday.

She received a notification that Tarell Isaac McMillian had been assigned to her. Gonzalez said things seemed normal until the order was abruptly interrupted.

“He started shopping and when he was almost finished, according to the app, it took a long time. I didn’t get any notifications, then all of a sudden it said you were canceled and assigned to another buyer,” Gonzalez said.

Shortly afterward, Gonzalez said she received a notification on her phone about a shooting at the same Food Lion. At this point, she was worried about safety.

“It was very alarming, it was scary. I had texted my husband that I thought the Instacart shopper was at Food Lion. Later we heard about the shooting. “This morning I received another notification of the individual being arrested,” Gonzalez said.

This morning, police identified McMillian as the shooter. Gonzalez said she put two and two together and is still trying to process what happened to the man who was supposed to deliver groceries to her home.

“The thing that scared me the most was hearing about the officer who didn’t have the opportunity to draw his weapon,” Gonzalez said. “I immediately thought of it: If he’s willing to shoot an officer, he’s obviously someone who is dangerous and violent, and he was” on the way to my house. It scared me because we have children.

Gonzalez said her prayers are with Officer Horan’s family and the Greensboro Police Department.

Gonzalez said she now questions food delivery apps and will never use them again. WFMY News 2 has reached out to Instacart for comment and is awaiting a response.
