At the South Jersey Store, Mega Millions players hope luck strikes twice

With his freshly printed lottery ticket in hand, Mike Diepetro hoped he had the winning numbers to print a billion dollars.

“It would be a wonderful gift,” he said. “I hope and pray.”

A steady stream of customers flocked to the Lindenwold Preet Food Mart in Camden County, New Jersey on Christmas Eve to secure their last-minute lottery tickets before Tuesday evening Mega Millions drawing. The jackpot has increased to $1 billion.

The store sold a single Jackpot winning ticket worth $222.6 million in June that matched every number drawn in the Powerball. While the chance of being struck by lightning is greater, regulars hope that lightning will strike twice.

“Oh man, this is the lucky store here,” said another customer. “We scored last time, we will strike again.”

When Cheriese Majatte stopped on Tuesday evening, she had not planned to buy a ticket as her husband had already bought her ticket earlier. But she said she couldn’t pass up the chance to increase her chances.

“This is the usual place where my husband does his acts, so I thought, ‘You know what, I’m here, let me just buy a few more tickets,'” she said.

The Mega Millions jackpot has been running since its last win of $810 million on September 10 in Texas. In the last drawing on Friday evening, no ticket matched all six numbers.

It was an unfortunate year for lottery players, with just three Mega Millions jackpot wins, the fewest wins in a single year since the game began in 2002.

If someone wins on Tuesday, it would be only the second Mega Millions jackpot win on Christmas Eve.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 302,575,350. Winning numbers will be announced in the drawing at 11:00 p.m. ET.
