Disneyland files “change of use permit” for former ESPN zoned site in downtown Disney

The building will be divided into three different storefronts.

Disney has filed a new multi-million dollar permit, suggesting big changes are coming to the former ESPN Zone location in Disneyland‘S Downtown Disney.

Disney Downtown Development:

  • Disneyland filed a change of use today allow with the City of Anaheim for the building that formerly housed the ESPN Zone Experience.
  • The permit is valued at $3.5 million and calls for dividing the building into separate storefronts, with two different locations taking up the first floor and one taking up the second floor.
  • The permit states: “Dtd – Building Cc – Change of Use: Subdividing first floor into Units #100 and 110 with 12,100 sq. ft. Conversion of A3/S-1 to new M/F-1.” Install new siding and 737 square meter canopies. Unit No. 200 will be constructed on the second floor with electrical work.”
  • No vendors have been announced for the space to be upgraded at this time, but it’s good to see work finally beginning on the large building on the west side of Downtown Disney.
  • The ESPN Zone originally closed alongside AMC Theaters and Rainforest Café June 2018 for what was to be a new resort hotel.

  • After problems with the city of Anaheim, the project was scrapped, leaving several large, empty storefronts abandoned.
  • The AMC Theater site was eventually demolished for the current Westside expansion and quickly became the Rainforest Café star Wars trading post.
  • However, minus a short lifespan Disney pop-up The ESPN Zone has been a photo experience ever since and sits empty.
  • It will be exciting to see what’s in store for the space as Disneyland continues to expand its Downtown Disney offerings.
