BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A portion of I-90 is closed and several communities have implemented travel restrictions and overnight parking bans during this weekend’s winter storm, which is expected to drop several feet of snow in the hardest-hit areas.

I-90 is closed from Exit 57 (Hamburg) to the Pennsylvania state line, a distance of approximately 60 miles.

Meanwhile, the Thruway Authority also advised motorists to avoid traveling on I-90 west of Lackawanna. Tandem trucks and empty commercial vehicles are prohibited on I-90 from exit 53 (Downtown Buffalo).

Additionally, a travel advisory has been issued for several communities in southern Erie County, including West Seneca, Hamburg, Orchard Park, Lackawanna and more. There is no advisory for the City of Buffalo and northern regions.

Below are the parking ban updates:

  • City of Cheektowaga: The city has implemented its overnight parking ban (between 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. starting early Saturday). The ban applies until April 1, 2025.
  • City of Tonawanda: The city’s night parking ban (between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.) begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday. The ban applies until March 15, 2025.

This weekend’s storm is the first major lake effect storm of the season. Several feet of snow are possible in some areas, particularly southern Erie County as well as Chautauqua, Cattaraugus and Wyoming counties. A lake effect snow warning began in these areas at 7 a.m. Friday and continues through 7 a.m. Monday.

No changes were announced for the Buffalo Bills’ game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night. While more than a foot of snow is expected near the stadium at Orchard Park before the game, it could stop snowing by kickoff.
