On Christmas Eve, someone could get the biggest Christmas present ever: a Mega Millions ticket worth $1 billion.

It’s a Christmas morning that many hope will be extra special this year.

“I got the mega million ticket, hopefully I win,” Donta Simmons said. “Tomorrow I’ll wake up, take a look and hopefully win.”

The jackpot has risen to about $1 billion, making it the seventh largest in history.

“My sister bought us this lottery ticket, we won $40…so we’re hoping to cash it in and hope we can win the mega millions,” Ashley Fries said.

Ashley Fries and her son Troy were on a mission to buy a winning ticket. They went to the Welcome Food Store on Loretto Road because they said it was “a feeling of happiness.”

This store has had so many lottery winners over the years that it claimed the name “The Little Lucky Store.” So there was a lot going on on Christmas Eve.

“We were beaten up most of the day,” said Welcome Food Store employee Peyton Daugherty. “There were people who bought lottery after lottery. We sold several Mega Millions today.”

That prize has increased since the last winner took home an $810 million ticket in September. But 29 drawings later and now it could be someone’s Christmas present.

“I’ll probably get some shoes,” Troy said when asked what he would do with the money.

The last time someone won a Mega Millions ticket on Christmas Eve was reportedly in 2002.

Simmons said he hopes it will be him this time.

“If I win, I’ll be on an island, then you won’t see me anymore,” Simmons said.

The largest price in history was a whopping $1.6 billion and was sold in our area last August at the Publix in Neptune Beach.

“Hopefully I’ll call you tomorrow because we won,” Ashley said.

If you choose the cash option, the winner will receive around $450 million.
