Police officer shot dead at Food Lion in North Carolina

GREENSBORO, NC (WBTV) – Greensboro Police are investigating a shooting that left an officer dead at a Food Lion Monday morning.

Police say the shooting happened around 11 a.m. in the 4700 block of Lawndale Drive.

Our CBS affiliate in Greensboro confirmed that one officer was killed in the shooting. He was identified as Michael Horan.

Greensboro police said they received reports of an armed man at the Food Lion.

Police said the suspect is in custody.

According to a spokesperson, Food Lion will be closed for the remainder of the day.

Food Lion spokesperson said in a statement:

Food Lion is deeply saddened by the tragedy that occurred at our store at 4709 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro. We extend our deepest condolences to the officer’s family and friends.

Because this is an active investigation, we are directing all questions to local law enforcement.

Food Lion is cooperating with authorities and the store will remain closed while the police investigation continues.

We are providing resources to support our employees during this difficult time.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings released the following statement after the fatal shooting:

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a brave hero who dedicated his life to protecting the Greensboro community. Earlier today, a Greensboro police officer was tragically killed in the line of duty – a hero simply doing his job. My condolences go out to the fallen officer, his family and everyone @GSO_Police. My thoughts and prayers are with the officer’s family, friends and colleagues. May they find strength and comfort during this incredibly difficult time.”
