Christmas football is here to stay

If there had been any doubt, there shouldn’t have been any.

The moment the NFL abruptly reversed its promise not to play games if December 25th fell on a Tuesday or Wednesday, it was clear that the NFL would find a way to play on any day of the week that happened. several games to play on Christmas Day.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones confirmed the obvious during his weekly appearance Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. Whenever Christmas takes place, professional football also takes place.

“Christmas Day is Christmas Day and It doesn’t wait for the day when it comes” Jones said via Christian Arnold of the New York Post. “We want to be there on Christmas Day. . . . I think the future is, no matter what day it is, we will be there at Christmas.”

Wednesday is the hardest day to do it. And it really wasn’t that hard to do. Let the teams that will play that day play on the Saturday of the previous week and it will be no different than a turnaround from Sunday to Thursday.

On Tuesday it’s even easier. Four (or six) teams that would have played on Sunday will have their games postponed by two days. Then they all play the following Sunday.

It’s longer than the usual short week, where there are only three days off between games. With four days off between Tuesday and Sunday, this is child’s play.

From the moment the NFL said there will be no games If the Christmas games were on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, we knew that would change. Firstly, there is way too much money to be made. Second, why leave the day back to the NBA?

It’s a captive audience, just like Thanksgiving. Even on Netflix, the money and ratings will justify removing games from the group of Sunday afternoon competitions.

So, yes, it is permanent. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday, Saturday. If Christmas falls on a day ending in “Y,” the NFL plays games every December 25th.
