Abandoned Amazon Packages in the Woods of Lakeville, MA; Driver Quotes Stress – NBC Boston

Several dozen Amazon packages were discovered apparently abandoned in the woods of Lakeville, Massachusetts, early Sunday morning, days before Christmas, police said.

Officers picked them up and returned the packages to Amazon, the agency said. The driver identified himself and will not be charged because he was stressed about unloading the packages.

They were spotted in three large, full carrier bags in the woods off Bedford Street around 2 a.m. by Sgt. Shawn Robert, according to police. Body camera footage shows the moment Robert discovered the abandoned packages scattered along the edge of the woods. He radioed for help when he realized not all of the items would fit in his patrol car.

Over the weekend, three bags of Amazon packages were found in the woods in Lakeville, Massachusetts.

The officers loaded them into vans to take them back to the train station.

Because there are no recent reports of stolen packages in the city, investigators decided to return them to the distribution center in Middleborough.

“I would like to commend Sgt. Shawn Robert for discovering these unattended packages during a routine patrol,” Chief Matthew Perkins said in an initial press release. “Sgt. Robert likely saved many local residents a Christmas headache by noticing these bags and hopefully returning them to Amazon in time for a holiday delivery.”

Food delivery robots use ultrasonic sensors, cameras, GPS and artificial intelligence to make short-distance deliveries.

Police did not initially know why the packages were left unattended, but said Monday evening that an Amazon driver came to the department earlier in the day and said they left the packages because of stress around 7 p.m. Saturday.

The department did not share more about the nature of the stress, but noted that the driver, whom it did not identify, planned to inform her supervisor about the incident.

“I am proud of the manner in which our Lakeville Police officers handled and investigated this matter. At this time, we are not pursuing criminal charges and view this as a human resources matter for Amazon,” Perkins said in a second statement.

Amazon confirmed to NBC10 Boston that all orders have been reprocessed and have either been redelivered or will be redelivered.

“Customers can check their accounts to see updates on expected delivery times. We also thank Lakeville PD for locating and returning the packages and we are working to assist in their investigation,” an Amazon representative said in a statement.

The statement was released before police announced that the driver had spoken to investigators and was not charged. NBC10 Boston has reached out to us for further comment.

Assonet resident Blake Brangan received a message from Amazon saying his package was lost – it had since arrived.

“It’s really crazy to just throw her in the woods like that, but luckily for the officer who found her,” he said, adding: “It’s stressful during the holidays, I felt really bad who whatever it was.”
