Amazon driver blamed stress as police found 80 packages in Massachusetts woods

Are you missing something under the Christmas tree this Christmas? A “stressed” Amazon driver admitted to leaving about 80 undelivered packages in the woods just days before the holiday, Lakeville police said.

Lakeville Police Chief Matthew Perkins said around 2 a.m. Sunday, Sgt. Shawn Robert was on routine patrol when “he noticed unattended items in a wooded area near 63 Bedford St..” in Middleboro, police said.

After examining the items, the officer found three bags full of Amazon packages scattered throughout the forest.

The location is near the Amazon.com fulfillment center on Commerce Boulevard in Middleboro.

Officers loaded the carrier bags into a pickup truck and took them back to the Lakeville Police Department, where they inventoried about 80 packages.

On Monday, an Amazon driver visited police headquarters and reported that they had dropped off the packages around 7 p.m. on Saturday “because they were stressed,” police said.

Police said they do not expect criminal charges and that the driver planned to report the incident to his supervisor.

“I am proud of the manner in which our Lakeville Police officers handled and investigated this matter. At this time, we are not pursuing criminal charges and view this as a human resources matter for Amazon,” Perkins said.

What happened to the packages?

Because police had no reports of stolen or missing packages, they returned them to the Middleboro Fulfillment Center on Commerce Boulevard.

Elsewhere in the US, Amazon employees are on strike over holiday workloads

On Thursday, a few days before the holiday, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters launched what it said was the largest strike against Amazon in American history. The strikes are taking place at Amazon warehouses in New York City, Atlanta, Southern California, San Francisco and Skokie, Illinois. The Teamsters union is demanding that Amazon honor a contract that provides higher wages, better benefits and safer working conditions.
