As Genshin Impact and Zenless Zone Zero continue their ever-growing advance, one of the HoYoverse action gacha games’ most exciting competitors is preparing a major update. Storm waves 2.0 takes us to the brand new Rinascita area and introduces new characters, weapons and lots of other story and side content. If you haven’t yet gotten to know this free challenger for Genshin’s crown, the new update is a great opportunity to do so, and it’s coming right at the beginning of 2025.

Wuthering Waves has all the polish and panache you’d expect from the best gacha games, but it particularly shines in the combat department. Developer Kuro Games has consciously focused on its combat systems, taking inspiration from the likes of Dark Souls to create a more skill-based system that allows the best players to defeat higher level opponents with good play. It’s also designed so that you can enjoy all of the content without feeling pressured to spend money, and since it’s a free PC game, you can try it out for free and see if you like it.

Wuthering Waves 2.0 is titled “All Silent Souls Can Sing” and takes us to the enchanted land of Rinascita, which includes several independent city-states. In addition to the new zone, you can look forward to the arrival of new playable characters Carlotta and Roccia. Several more resonators from the region will be released in later updates as more Wuthering Waves banners are introduced.

You don’t have to wait to get there either, because thanks to the main quest’s fast-track feature, you can jump to Rinascita and the 2.0 story after completing chapter one and act three of the first main quest. Expect numerous quality of life improvements in the new update: you can change the appearance of your rover every 24 hours, access Synthesis on the go, and, for example, use flight for smoother exploration of the new world.

An immersion mode allows you to hide the interface to truly immerse yourself in the experience, and the ability to challenge boss battles early on allows you to earn character upgrade materials for your newest resonators. Beyond launch, there are a wealth of additional events, ranging from exploration and companion invite events to photo collections and combat challenges, including special co-op tasks.
